Debating the religious status of the dead

Another episode in the ongoing discussion between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Jewish leaders about the practice of proxy baptizing Holocaust victims.

  1. The interesting thing I found on this article was the abundance of public responses that, while they use various forms of rhetoric, are full of fallacies...and not the kind of fallacies that can squeeze by as legitimate arguments.
    I was please, however, with the accuracy of this article. NPR seems to do a nice job of presenting a story without a bias twist. Go NPR!

  2. Thanks, Evelyn. Last time we floated the idea that fallacies sometimes aren't fallacies when you consider audience, situation, general context, etc. I think we like the idea of fallacies because it gives us ammunition, right?

    I bet there are certain fallacies that come up more in religious communication than in other discourse. Ad hominem, perhaps? Appeal to ignorance? Argumentum ad mysterium?
